May 18, 2016:
On Thursday, May 12th Diversified Insurance Solutions hosted the second event in their 2016 Education Series at the Tripoli Shrine Center in Milwaukee. The event was titled “Winning through Wellness: How the Best Companies Compete with the Healthiest Teams” and featured international speaker and wellness actuary Andrew Sykes. Andrew is the founder and president of Habits at Work, a consulting firm that utilizes actuarial science and behavioral research to aid organizations in maximizing the effectiveness of their wellness efforts.
Andrew’s speech featured an interesting perspective on Wellness designed to help change employers’ mindset when it comes to traditional workplace wellness. He discussed how many employers approach wellness as a means of controlling their healthcare costs and as a reactive response to diagnoses. But Andrew demonstrated that the real benefit of healthier employees is their increased productivity, which is most effectively achieved by being proactive in your corporate wellness approach.
Through the use of numerous studies and statistics, Andrew effectively showed the attendees the dramatic effects health habits can have on individuals. He showed how the United States workforce is actually becoming less healthy than they were a generation ago and this can be attributed to unhealthy habits like smoking, poor diet, stress management and, especially, lack of exercise.
He then discussed the major barriers to practicing healthy habits and how to move past them. The most common barriers to healthy habits include perceived lack of time, motivation and confidence in success. He shared methods for overcoming these barriers by working with others and making each other accountable for your wellness goals.
One of the key takeaways from the address was that practicing healthy habits at work can dramatically improve your overall health, making you a happier and more productive employee and that over time this can lend itself to lower healthcare costs.
Attendees of the event thoroughly enjoyed Andrew’s presentation and looking at wellness from a different perspective. They appreciated the analytic comparisons, learning what’s most beneficial in a wellness program and the immediate healthy habits they can implement to increase employee engagement and productivity.
